How to Hate October and Love it at the Same Time in 5 Ways

I love fall. Don’t get me wrong. But, and there’s a big BUT, I hate Halloween. I hate it. I am so sensitive to creepy stuff. I hate being scared, I hate scary movies, anything to do with zombies, superstitions, all of it. And of course, come October 1st, everyone has all of their Halloween decorations out – BAM! And it’s everywhere. Then I have 30 more days to deal with it – see it, walk past it, try not to freak myself out by it. Especially when I have to walk by stuff like this to drop off my rent check:

And I prayed the entire time that they didn’t have a motion sensor in them to scare the shit out of me. Thank god they didn’t! The whole complex would have heard the highest pitch scream ever. Then it really would be like a Halloween horror down in the parking lot. Things that I’m not fond of:

  1. Halloween
  2. People trying to scare me
  3. All the candy that I can never stop eating
  4. Costumes – Looking for costumes and trying to come up with something clever enough, which I fail at every year. Every freaking year.
  5. The pressure to find something awesome to do for Halloween. I call it one of those stupid holidays, much like New Year’s, 4th of July, St. Patrick’s Day; those holidays where there is so much build up to find something cool to do and then you end up doing nothing. Big whoop. All that worry for nothing.

But, like I said, I do love it. When the decorations are not giving me heart attacks and people in costume aren’t giving me nightmares, there are actually a few things I enjoy. And yes, I know, this is probably the most cliched post I’ll ever do. I promise.

1. Fall colors as the leaves begin to change

2. When the air starts to get a little brisk

3. Time to pull out the winter clothes – Sweater Weather! – and pack away all the unnecessary tank tops and shorts

4. Sleeping with the windows open just to cuddle up under the covers

5. Drinking warm coffee drinks to warm me up from the inside out – and hate me if you want, but I will not be drinking the ever so popular Pumpkin Spice Latte. I’ll just never understand that one.

Happy freaking October y’all 🙂

  1. I miss the leaves changing. That and the crisp wet dead leaves and muddy ground smell. I’ll have to keep my PSL though. I hope you don’t run into too many motion sensor decorations!

  2. YES! Someone else who a.) thinks Halloween is dumb and overrated besides me, and b.) thinks Pumpkin Spice Lattés are overrated! I have to say, I’ve never done Halloween, but to me, the only fun part would be the costume, which you can do anyway without the pressure of Halloween. I swear that everyone I follow, their favorite season is fall, and favorite holiday is Halloween. While two of your stupid holidays are two of my favorites, I will forgive, because I agree with your principal. 😉 If you think about it, all holidays have the potential to be stupid, and fall flat. What really makes them special (at least to me) is the traditions that your particular family choose to do on that day, despite what culture says we should be doing. Haha, maybe that’s because I grew up celebrating non-traditional holidays, but I think that just makes them more special. If you aren’t stressing to get the turkey cooked perfectly and the right amount of stuffing, and say forget it, we’re doing pizza and a movie, I personally, think it’s easier to enjoy the holiday. 🙂 For example, the reason the 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays is because every year, we help a pyro friend setup fireworks for the local show. It’s three days of hard, hot work, but it’s spent with friends and it’s a fun break of routine to create something that makes other people happy. (Plus, our friend’s shows are the best.) If you don’t enjoy the way the rest of the culture celebrates the holiday, do it the way that makes you happy, even if it’s just like a bonus day off work, and you want to clean the house. Anyway, that’s just my opinion, take it or leave it. 😀 😉

  3. If I see one more pumpkin spice anything, I’m going to ban the phrase from my vocabulary. I’m totally not a fan and everything isn’t meant to be pumpkin spiced.

  5. I think Halloween can be fun, as usually dress up doesn’t involve scary costumes and gory make up. Which sounds like a nightmare for you! However, we hardly celebrate it in the UK either. We have parties sometimes, mainly in university and as just another excuse to dress up or have a party!

One thing that has managed to creep over here, this year more than any other, is pumpkin spice everything! What’s with that? It just doesn’t sound nice! Definitely with you on that one!

I’m also wondering where this love of fall/autumn comes from – hello, what about summer?!
